Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell Prototype
Performance

The front-wheel-drive 2008 Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell is powered by a complex system consisting of an electric motor, a fuel cell stack, a power management and distribution module (PMD), and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack. The vehicle runs on hydrogen, which is stored in compressed form within three rear-mounted, carbon-fiber-encased tanks. The fuel cell stack combines the stored hydrogen with oxygen from the air to produce electricity, which the PMD then routes to the electric motor along with electricity from the battery pack. The motor, in turn, sends up to 93 kilowatts of energy to the front wheels — enough electricity to power 10 homes, says GM. The only emissions byproduct is water vapor, which escapes via four outlets in the rear fascia.

Honda Civic Hybrid With Leather and Navigation
Design/Fit and Finish

Inside, the swoopy dash looks more design-y than previous-generation Civics. Our tester featured the new-for-2009 leather seating, which had a fine, light texture and a snazzy navy blue hue. Other interior materials are made from perfectly acceptable plastics, some with a pleasant sheen, some with a pebbly look to them. The leather-trimmed steering wheel is moderately grippy. Our test vehicle seemed well put together and we noticed no squeaks or rattles in our time behind the wheel.

Who Should Buy This Vehicle?

Those who don't mind paying through the nose in order to transport up to seven passengers in extraordinary comfort — and like the idea of using less of a finite resource than the gas-powered version.

Nissan 350Z Performance

All those numbers tie into a nimble, albeit somewhat heavy package. The clutch takes a bit of getting used to, as the point of engagement seems high. But once the driver is acclimated, the Z launches off the line in a consistent, predictable way — although it's not what you'd call super snappy. When the temptation strikes to let it out, the 350Z offers plenty of power at all revs, although it seems to favor the upper range of the tachometer. On twists and turns in the road, the car feels nicely balanced and, in line with expectations for a rear-wheel-drive sports car, turn-in is crisp and responsive. Steering, however, feels unnecessarily heavy, and there is a tendency for the back end to come out a bit around corners during particularly spirited driving. In those respects, the Z's handling doesn't fare quite as well as, say, the Mazda RX-8. If the Z were lighter, it would be even more nimble and responsive.
